Queenstown is the central hub for tourism in the region and offers everything visitors need to enjoy their holiday. Set amidst beautiful surroundings on the shores of lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is a pleasant town offering countless activities such as a cable car ride to the top of Bob’s Peak, which offers stunning views over the lake and mountains, hiking and cycling trails, and the beautiful Queenstown Gardens among others. Central Otago features many historical towns dating back to the mining era. Historical buildings can be found in Ophir, St Bathans and the ghost town of Macetown. The best known town for the regions heritage is Arrowtown, which boasts a huge number of well preserved buildings. Ranfurly with its Art Deco style downtown is also well worth a visit.
Other highlights in Central Otago include Mount Aspiring National Park, which hosts a wonderful mixture of remote wilderness, high mountains and beautiful river valleys. Lake Wanaka and Wanaka town offer kayaking, cycling, hiking and other activities, and the winegrowing areas of Alexandra, Cromwell and Queenstown invite for easy walks and wine tasting.
